How does Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition address the rigor of the Common Core State Standards?

Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition is designed to meet the rigors of the Common Core State Standards. Scaffolding and modeling ensure that all students can access increasingly complex material. Literary selections in the program include exemplar texts from the Common Core Framework. Throughout the program, students have opportunities to analyze text structures and literary elements in depth. Skills workshops and independent reading features give students a chance to develop and apply strategies with increased independence. Writing, speaking, and listening are also integrated throughout the program with rigorous skill instruction.

Is Understanding by Design still an integral part of Prentice Hall Literature?

Absolutely. In fact, the Understanding by Design framework is critical to ensuring that students meet the rigor associated with the Common Core State Standards. As with the Common Core State Standards, the starting point in UbD is identifying what students need to accomplish, and what the learning outcomes should then be. Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition provides a text complexity analysis for featured reading selections and featured independent reading titles. The program also includes features such as Text Complexity Rubrics, which guide teachers in choosing the leveled reading selection that is appropriate for their students.

How does the program support students in reading more complex text?

Students move from close reading, to modeled examples, to leveled reading and on to independent reading. Before, during, and after reading features also guide and support students as they encounter more complex reading selections.

Where can I find informational texts?

Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition includes informational texts across content areas. Throughout the program, students have opportunities to work with historical, scientific, and factual texts. Selections include exemplar texts from the Common Core Framework. Exposure to these selections increases students' familiarity with different text structures and improves their ability to independently read nonfiction text.

Vocabulary

What kinds of vocabulary are included in Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition?

Throughout the program, students get extensive practice with general and domain-specific vocabulary. There is also a focus on key vocabulary skills, such as information about roots and word origins.

Writing

How is writing incorporated into instruction?

The Common Core State Standards call for instruction in argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing. Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition incorporates each of these into instruction. Every unit includes in-depth writing workshops, which take students through the complete writing process: from drafting to publishing. Within the table of contents, you'll find an overview of the Common Core State Standards that are addressed in each unit. You'll also find this information at the beginning of each lesson and at point of use throughout the lesson.

Assessment

How is assessment addressed in Prentice Hall Common Core Edition?

Prentice Hall Literature Common Core Edition includes both traditional assessments and the types of performance-based assessments that are called for in the Common Core State Standards. Students are assessed across the key Common Core domains of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language.

Technology

How is technology incorporated into the program?
